Help with scanning, your family library, and Family Plus.

A cover finds the wrong book

Include the full title, author, and subtitle in the scan frame, reduce glare, and tap Read cover. Books in the same series can look very similar. Try the printed book barcode for a more precise edition match, or use Search with the title and author.

The camera is unavailable

Allow camera access for AR Family Book Scanner in iPhone Settings. You can always use Search to look up a title, author, or ISBN.

Save a book or record a library loan

1. Open Library and add a child using a nickname.
2. Scan or search for a book, open its details, and tap Save to Library.
3. Open the saved book to change its reading status or record a library loan and optional due date.
4. Mark the loan returned when the library has the book. Finishing a book and returning it are separate actions.

Audience estimates

We estimate a book’s intended audience from independent catalog facts using TypeSafe Jev. Age groups are broad guides, not a measure of text difficulty or a guarantee about content. An estimate is shown only when its confidence reaches 80%; otherwise the app says “Age range not certain.” The confidence score is not a guarantee of accuracy. Preview books before choosing for your child.

Family Plus and Apple Intelligence

Family Plus is a one-time purchase with no subscription. It includes guided recommendations by interest, audience estimate, and language. Audience filtering only includes books with a confident estimate; fewer books may be available while estimates are being prepared. Natural-language refinement additionally needs a compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled and its model downloaded.

Internet and saved books

The app includes an independent starter catalog. Searching beyond it, refreshing book facts, preparing new estimates, and loading cover images need an internet connection. Previously saved metadata and reading records remain available offline. A missing book or uncertain age range does not erase your saved reading history.

Restore a purchase

Open Library settings and tap Restore Purchases using the Apple Account that purchased Family Plus, or an eligible Family Sharing account. Apple handles purchase and refund questions at Apple billing support. Family records remain readable and editable if premium access is removed; the free limits apply to new additions.

Reminders and backups

Enable Library return reminders in Library settings and allow notifications. Family Plus reminders run locally on your iPhone. To move your records, save a JSON library backup, then restore it on the destination device. A restore replaces the destination library, so save its backup first if needed.
